SCH On Course To Expand Cruise Ship Operations In Southampton

Port terminal operators Southampton Cargo Handling (SCH) are set to expand their cruise ship services in Southampton this year following the capture of new business.

SCH will handle over 70 cruise vessels in Southampton during 2016 after winning a contract for up to three years to service Saga Cruises’ ships, adding to operations handling calls by Royal Caribbean International (RCI), Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Cruises .

Starting in April, the company will carry out work including baggage handling, stores loading and mooring for Southampton callers such as Navigator of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Saga Sapphire and Saga Pearl II. In addition, SCH will be handling the maiden calls in Southampton of the new RCI ships, Ovation of the Seas and, the biggest cruise ship in the world, Harmony of the Seas.

“Having extended our cruise ship handling to other UK ports, it is great to see us building business in the port where the company originally started operations. This is good news for our core workforce and our agency subsidiary, Pathfinder Personnel,” explained SCH Business Development Manager Lee Davis.

SCH’s busy 2016 season kicks off in April and extends throughout the year, with operations serving hundreds of thousands of passengers.

Although the customer base differs, SCH’s sister company Cruise and Passenger Services (CPS), the UK’s biggest valet parking company, is also expecting extra volumes through Southampton with its services catering for over 200 cruise ships visiting the port.

And it’s the same story at Portsmouth International Port where another SCH sister company, Southern Maritime services (SMS), has 36 ship calls scheduled for the forthcoming cruise season including the vessels Lindblad Expeditions’ NG Orion, Sea Explorer 1 (Noble Caledonia) and Hapag Lloyd’s Bremen, all making their maiden calls at PIP.

SCH Secures Exclusive Agreement To Handle Cruise Ships In Liverpool

Cruise handling specialists SCH have been awarded a contract for up to three years to provide stevedore services to all cruise ships calling at Liverpool Cruise Terminal.

SCH will handle around 60 cruise ships per year calling at Liverpool Cruise Terminal following the award of the contract by Liverpool City Council, initially for two years and with an option for a further year. Sister company Cruise and Passenger Services (CPS) already provides valet car parking services for passengers joining cruise ships in Liverpool.

Angie Redhead, Liverpool Cruise and Operations Manager, said: “We were impressed by SCH’s range of capabilities and their extensive network of cruise operations spread throughout the UK. Liverpool is growing fast as a turnaround and day call cruise port and we need a reliable, efficient port handling operator. We are confident that SCH can provide us with that service based on observations in other UK ports, as well as the experience we already have working with CPS in valet car parking.”

SCH and its sister companies are recognised as the UK’s most extensive cruise ship handling specialists, with operations in Portsmouth, Oban and Southampton. The company, which has been established for 25 years, currently handles more than 200 calls a year by cruise ships at ports throughout the UK, with the emphasis on recruiting specialist labour locally through its personnel company Pathfinder Personnel.

The company plans to utilise a total of up to 50 personnel for stevedoring and valet car parking operations at Liverpool.

Director Kevin Hulme commented: “We are delighted to be awarded the contract and are committed to helping Liverpool grow as a cruise port, both for turnaround operations and as a cruise destination. We will be employing locally-based workers to supplement the workforce we already manage in Liverpool as part of our CPS business.”

SCH will provide baggage handling, stores loading and mooring services for the increasing number of cruise ships calling in Liverpool, with the contract becoming fully operational ready for the start of the 2016 season in May.

“We have a strong relationship with the major cruise lines calling in the UK who rely on CPS and its sister companies to provide passengers with a first class experience in the ports where we operate. As cruise ship handlers, we provide services for more than 300,000 passengers a year and we look forward to helping Liverpool continue to build its reputation as a leading force in the UK cruise business,” added Mr Hulme.

CPS and SCH Help Southampton to Number One Cruise Position

Valet car parking specialists Cruise and Passenger Services (CPS) and port terminal operators Southampton Cargo Handling (SCH) have helped to make Southampton the top UK cruise ship departure port following the inaugural Wave Awards.

The port was selected as winner by an editorial panel of World of Cruising, Cruise Ports & Destinations and Cruise Trade News at the awards ceremony in London.

Southampton beat 11 other British ports to take the Best UK Departure Port title.

CPS is the UK’s leading valet car parking company, ensuring the safe keeping of some 75,000 cars while passengers are away. Most of the company’s business is in Southampton but CPS also serves passengers at Liverpool, Portsmouth and Oban in Scotland. SCH provides baggage handling, stores loading and mooring services to some 70 Southampton cruise ship callers a year.

Business Development Manager Lee Davis commented: “As major suppliers in the cruise industry, CPS and SCH congratulate Southampton on its number one cruise status and remain committed to maintaining the high levels of service that have enabled the port to win this prestigious award.”
Southampton port manager, Clive Thomas said: “We are thrilled to be named the Best UK Departure Port.

“ABP Southampton prides itself on providing an excellent departure experience for all cruise passengers and it is fantastic to be recognised for this quality service by the Wave Awards judging panel.”
